History-Social Science

Summer provides many opportunities for families to promote and encourage geographic awareness. Here a re a few easy activities that will help pre-school and primary grade students understand and appreciate their surroundings and become aware of geography concepts of place, location and movement. Kindergarten  through eighth grades are now using the new History-Social Science curriculum materials adopted last year.  The Harcourt Brace Social Studies program follows the History-Social Science Framework for California.

Topics for each grade are:
K	Learning and Working Now and Long Ago
Grade 1	A Child’s Place in Time and Space
Grade 2	People Who Make a Difference
Grade 3	Continuity and  Change  (including local Community)
Grade 4	California: A Changing State
Grade 5	United States History and Geography:  Making a New Nation
Grade 6	World History and Geography:  Ancient Civilizations
Grade 7	World History and Geography:  Medieval and Early Modern Times
Grade 8	United States History and Geography:  Growth and Conflict

The  History-Social Science Committee has completed a Curriculum Guide for  HSS.  This will include a suggested teaching calendar and sample lessons for the major topics  for each grade.
