A Message to Our Community

As everyone is aware, we are facing some difficult financial times in California and throughout much of the nation. The Statewide budget woes, however, have hit schools especially hard this year. We are being asked to cut major funds from our current year budget! The Governor has informed us that he will not send us a large portion of the funds he promised to us for the 2002-03 school year that we are halfway through. We are in the process of taking immediate steps to reduce our expenses in order to avoid a major crisis next year!

As we begin to reduce expenditures, we want to hear from our whole community-our parents, students, staff and district residents-with their priorities. We are asking that, instead of telling us what you want cut, (which is divisive) that you instead focus on what your priorities are for students who graduate. Whether one year from now or ten, what things do you want our graduates to have experienced and/or to know? This will keep us focused on our mission and will form the criteria for our recommendation to the Board of Directors of the District. We are planning several meetings, some for staff, some for everyone, throughout our district. These meetings will be held at night and during the day as well so that you will be able to attend one of them. If you are not able to attend any of them, we will have a survey form available on the web shortly after February 5, 2003.

In the meanwhile, if you have positive suggestions on how to save money, please send it along to me at jcottingim@travisusd.k12.ca.us or 437-8201/8210. We will compile these suggestions and implement any that we can right away. If we work together during this time, we will come through it stronger and more focused on our highest priorities. I look forward to meeting many of you, greeting many of you with whom I have already worked or have met. I am anxious to listen to your priorities and to receive information and suggestions from you.

I hope to hear form you,

Jacki L. Cottingim PhD, Superintendent
Travis USD
