Tom Schultz and Barb Marianno demonstrate the new video microscope
On Thurs., February. 7, from 3:30-6:00 in the Cambridge Library, Travis teachers met for the 2nd session of the "Nuts and Bolts of Teaching Science at the Elementary Level" series. Barb Marianno, Science Curriculum Associate for Travis, K-6, was the presenter, along with Tom Schultz, 5th grade teacher at Cambridge.
Information concerning Science Tools and how to use them in the elementary classroom was the focus of the session. Different kinds of microscopes (including the video microscope that belongs to Cambridge and demonstrated by Tom Schultz), measurement tools, balance scales, a "hands-on" acitivity using ice, water, salt, and thermometers, and looking at live specimens (crickets and meal worms!)using Discovery Scopes were enjoyed by all!
Teachers received two wonderful science resource books and some "hands-on" materials for use in their classrooms. A 3rd session in April, will address Science and Literacy and how literacy skills can be taught through science content.
On February. 21, K-6 staff will be able to attend
the first of, possibly, 5 sessions, concerned with physical science content
knowledge. Session 1 on Matter will be taught by high school science teacher,
Rick Trefz and will be held at Cambridge School, from 3:30-6:00. For more information
