The Logo Project

The Lego Project was started at Foxboro Elementary School in May of 2003.  For this pilot program, teachers selected students they felt could benefit from additional experience in geometry, measurement, and algebra.  All students were considered - those wanting more practice as well as those that wanting enrichment.  The result was an exciting discovery of mathematics and technology as children learned how to program the computer to draw geometric shapes, write procedures and commands, and create a presentation. Each student has created a page at the end of their project for you to choose the variables and create your own design.  We presented our projects at a Parent Night with parents taking over the computers as they explored with variables on the "You Try It" page.  Talk about impressed parents and proud children!

Teacher Comments

  • I like the idea of small, short classes being available on teacher time. The small groups make working and asking questions less intimidating.

  • They (the students) are coming up with ideas on what projects we can do next.  One student wanted to make a book for our pen pals in Wisconsin .  As the end of the year is approaching, I wasn't sure it would get there in time with standard mail.  He suggested we put it in a PowerPoint presentation and send it to them via email.  He explained how we could write jokes first, then type them, take a picture of our drawing and put it in our presentation.  They are coming up with new ideas all the time!

  • This has been a learning year for me and my students.  I feel that I have gained a wealth of information using technology.  I have passed this on to my students and they love learning even more.  I don't know why I didn't take the Intel class sooner.  I can just imagine what we will be doing in a few years!  I would recommend the Intel class to everyone and hope our technology support continues to grow as we do!  Thank you for everything!

  • I think the enthusiasm generated for students and teachers alike is invaluable.  It allows projects to be created that every single student can be proud of not just those that are artistic.  It also shows the importance of following directions and working through things step by step. The success of the program is directly linked to your enthusiasm, patience, positive attitude and knowledge of the technology.

Parent Comments

This technology program is vital to the early development of the students.  With the increase in dependence on technology, its important children are afforded the opportunity to learn as much as possible at the earliest age.  This capability greatly expands the child’s learning experiences by making a vast amount of information at their fingertips.  It also prepares them at an early age on computer use and the availability of additional information.  More importantly, this technology within the classroom allows the children to work with and learn from their peers, expanding their horizons.  I truly believe it has enhanced my child’s learning experience.  It’s critical this program continues for the development of all students especially those without home computers.
Mr. and Mrs. Monteri ONeal
3rd grade

Emily has shown more interest in the computer now.  She has gotten really good with PowerPoint.  She has created some really good stuff on the computer.  Nice pictures.  She looks forward to working with the computers at school every day.  Thank you so much for giving her the opportunity to learn more on computers.
Lori and Eric McGahey

I think it’s a great opportunity!  These children are being able to have this exposure and learn how to incorporate school work with this technology.
Mrs. Kemp

I wasn’t aware of the grant Scandia received for computers.  It good to hear we are keeping up with technology for our children to learn.  I hope Scandia receives more grants to purchase additional computers in the future.
Mr. Pearse

Having computers available for the students at Scandia helps toward further development at this education level.
Mr. Lew Lewis
2nd grade

Technology is constantly advancing as the years go by.  I feel as a parent that education using this advancing technology is very important.  My daughter is 7 years old, and nearly typing as well as I!  I remember taking typing class my senior year in high school.  My suggestion is to continue the program, so as not to fall behind the power curve, as education will benefit greatly from it.
Mr. Maurice Alumbaugh

I think it’s wonderful that the student have opportunities to become familiar with using computers for research and school projects.  I feel it is extremely important for children to be exposed to computers and learning how to use them as a regular part of their curriculum.
Mrs. Kristi Morgan

My son Christopher and I enjoy having computers in the classroom.  My child has learned a lot about computers and how to use them this year in 2nd grade.  Technology is always changing, so I feel it is great that the children have an opportunity to learn about it as it changes.  Our children are our future and technology plays a big part today as in the future!
Mrs. Sarah Martinez
2nd grade

We were amazed at our daughter’s computer skills.  The computer lab truly enriched her abilities using our home computer.  It is programs like these that continue to improve our schools learning environment.
