Certificated Staff Development (Buy-Back Days)Travis
Unified School District’s teaching contract compensates each teacher
for 183 days of employment per school year. This includes 182 working
days plus one day (6.5 hours) of mandatory staff development. Employees
working on reduced contracts are still required to complete one full
day (6.5 hours) of mandatory staff development.
In addition to the required 6.5 hours of staff development, the employee can be paid for an additional two days (13.0 hours) of staff development each school year. These are sometimes referred to as Staff Development Buy-Back Days. The staff development must take place outside of the regular duty day and have prior approval of your principal or supervisor. All activities must be a minimum of 2 hours of actual seat time, not including lunch or meal time. The staff development must be completed no earlier than July 1st of the current school year and completed no later than one week after the completion of the traditional school year. Typically this ending date falls near June 15th. The paperwork process is as follows: 1. PRIOR APPROVAL: The employee submits a SB 1193 Staff Development Request authorization form to their principal or supervisor asking for advance approval that a course or seminar qualify for staff development credit. Prior approval is not required for the district sponsored staff development day schedule prior to the start of the traditional school year in August. Once approved, the original of this form goes back to the employee and the copy is retained in the school office. 2. VALIDATION OF ATTENDANCE: When the employee attends the staff development event, they must complete a form SB1193 Staff Development Validation of Participation, have the trainer sign to confirm their attendance and number of hours of training. This SB1193 Validation form is signed by the employee and then submitted to the employee’s principal or supervisor for their signature. Once approved, two copies are sent to the district office for processing, a copy is retained in the school office, and a copy is returned to the employee for their records. 3. COMPENSATION: The first 6.5 hours of staff development validation received are applied toward the mandatory requirement. The next 13.0 hours (6.5 hours for each block) of staff development validation will be compensated at the rate of $229.00 per day for a maximum of $458.00. Payments are made on a quarterly basis during the school year once you have submitted validation totaling 19.5 hours (6.5 required + 13.0 for the two buy-back days). In June we will compensate employees who have completed only 1 buy-back day. 4. On the June warrant, any employee who has not completed the mandatory 6.5 hours of staff development will have his/her pay docked the equivalent of one day’s compensation. Since this is a negotiated work day that has not been completed, we will have to report one less day of service credit to STRS. This may effect retirement calculations – contact STRS for details. Questions as to what types of classes or training is appropriate for staff development should be directed to your principal or supervisor. Questions as to how many hours of staff development you have been credited for this year or when you will be compensated should be directed to Human Resources at 437-8206 or by email at dconolley@travisusd.k12.ca.us.
