Military Student Transition Team!

The Military Student Transition Team (MST2) is a unique and innovative program designed to support the military child through numerous transitions. Based on the High School S2S Program, this exciting elementary support program is has been in development for the last three years. MST2 consists of five complementary components each designed with the child as the focal point.

Rational Goals Background Parent Partnership
Student Ambassadors   Student Ambassadors   Emotional/ Psychological  Procedural changes

Rational

When Military students move they must face many adjustments socially, academically, psychologically, and emotionally.  School should be a safe place, and while limited, the school transition can be made easier for a child by supporting him/her with making friends, learning new curriculum, routines and rules.  This Transition program is designed to give the new student support while adjusting to their new school while at the same time helping the child continue to progress academically.

Goal

The goals of MST2 are three-fold: a) to support families during transitions, b) to relieve a child's fear and anxiety of trying to fit into a new school, and c) to assist students in closing academic gaps created by the frequent moves associated with the military life. Five objectives designed to support the total child and provide a 360 degree support system form the structure of the program. These objectives address the following domains: social (student ambassadors), emotional/ psychological, academic, parent support, and in-processing/ out-processing procedures. Since the primary goal is to relieve the anxiety associated with school transitions, and thereby, help close the achievement gap of military students, every new student is paired with trained student ambassadors before their first day in their new school.

Background

Elementary school children are often anxious and frightened when changing schools – especially mid - year.  Typically, the task of explaining procedures was handled by the classroom teacher after the child reached the classroom.  Military children and families have unique needs and children must acclimate and get involved in their new schools quickly due to the numerous transitions.  The Military Student Transition Team (MST2) is a unique program designed to support the total student during transitions: socially, emotionally, psychologically, as well as academically.  Our Student Ambassadors are trained to help ease important social transitions with their peers by meeting with the new students before they start in their new class.  Children start their first day of school knowing all key staff, as well as class procedures for PE, music, library and lunch, eliminating apprehensions and fears.
