Golden West Middle School

----Letter To Parents and Students----

RE: Mr. Scholz's Science Class

Dear Parents and Students:

I am happy to be back for a new year at Golden West Middle School. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and that you're eager to begin another school year.
Expectations of the student clearly stated and understood make for a better working environment. If you need to contact me at any time concerning your son or daughter, please feel free to call the school. I will return your call as soon as possible. I have over 160 students and if you can E-mail your questions this is the most efficient method of contact. If you are interested in being on my parent E-mail list, please E-mail me ASAP and I will add you to my parent list. I E-mail parents every few weeks and update you on upcoming tests, projects, notebook checks, and school activities.

The more a parent/guardian is involved in a child's education the better off they are. Encourage your son/daughter to discuss with you daily what they are doing in school. You can use their school planner as a guide to what was taught each day.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1.) Maintain a Science notebook: a three-ring binder is required. Notebooks are collected toward the end of each quarter. One day late is 50% off, no credit after 2 days, except when a student is absent from class.
2.) Complete homework/labwork/classwork assignments on time. Partial credit will only be given for obvious effort. Assignments will not be accepted late. In the case of excused absences, students will have the number of days absent to make up work for full credit.
3.) Pass chapter tests and quizzes.
4.) Participate in classroom activities and class discussions.
5.) When a student is absent he/she shall FIRST look in the assignment log, and then ask the teacher for the appropriate missing assignment(s) i.e.: worksheet, test, quiz, lab etc. THE STUDENT IS ALWAYS FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOP MAKING UP ALL MISSED WORK WHENEVER ABSENT!!
6.) Complete quarter projects…details will be provided each quarter.

Total grade for each quarter is computed based on understanding of the 7th Grade California Science Standards, using the following approximate percentages:

Tests 25%
Homework/Classwork/Quizzes 25%
Notebook 20%
Quarter report 20%
Participation 10%

Note--A student who does poorly on tests and quizzes can still pass this course with an organized notebook, and obvious effort on assignments.
Classroom Procedures/Rules:

1.) Come to class on time and be prepared to learn and follow directions.
2.) Begin class by writing down the agenda and homework in your planner.
3.) Be prepared before the tardy bell rings by:
-being in the classroom in your seat
-having your notebook with an adequate paper supply
-having many sharpened pencils
-having no food products or gum in your mouth
-having prior day’s assignments ready to review
4.) Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself and leave other people's property alone.
5.) Throw no objects for any reason.
6.) Do not disturb nor disrupt the educational process of others; for example, talking when you should
be listening or working.
7.) Follow all school rules.
8.) Remain in your seat until the teacher excuses you from class

CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING RULES:

1. First consequence is a warning form the teacher.

2. Second consequence is to write a positive statement regarding the specified behavior problem.

3. Third consequence is detention and/or a parent phone call.

-Continual problems will result in referral to the office /SAS/Behavior contract

-Please be aware that these steps will be followed when at all possible but there may be an occasion where if a student's behavior is immediately intolerable or a threat to other students or the teacher, the student will be sent immediately to the assistant principal.

Student note: Keep this letter in your notebook all year!! (Yes, all year long!!!)
