Dear Parents or Guardians,

In the next few weeks all seventh grade students will be learning about the hormone system and both male and female reproductive systems. For some students this is a review of fifth and sixth grade Family Life depending on what school they attended. This is basic anatomy and nothing else (chapter 16 of Science book). If you do not want your son/daughter to learn the male and female anatomy, then please e mail (or send a note to) his/her science teacher tomorrow.

After the review of reproduction and development (chapter 16), all seventh grade science teachers will be teaching a unit called “Postponing Sexual Involvement” (PSI). A preview of this material will be available for you on Monday, May 2, 2011 in room A-5 from 3:10 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Golden West Middle School. You will need to go to the office and get a “visitors pass” before coming on campus. If you are interested or concerned about the curriculum, we encourage you to attend. This program raises many questions and offers families a chance to grow and learn together. We will cover decision-making skills, peer pressure, healthy relationships, communication, and refusal skills. We also include information on sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and contraceptives. The information on contraceptives shows students their failure rates and that they are for married couples. Please be assured that we stress ABSTINENCE as the only 100% safe alternative to disease and/or unplanned pregnancy.

We hope you will support the growing need for this unit. However, if you do not want your son or daughter to participate in the PSI Unit please return the bottom of this form and an alternative independent study will be assigned.
