Welcome to Mr. Schultz's 5th Grade Classroom

Welcome to our Home Page,

If you ask your child whether they have homework, they may say, “No” but that's probably not true. The Travis Unified School District policy suggests that fifth grade students should spend an average of 160 minutes on homework each week and that each student should read at home for at least 30 minutes each day. Use your judgment to determine how long and how much your child should do each day.

Homework is usually work started in class that needs to be completed at home.

Your child should copy the assignments from the classroom board into their planner each morning. Any assignments given during the day should also be copied into their planner. Look at their Weekly Assignment Report to decide what they should work on for homework.
With an eye toward the basics, you can start with the 3 R's and expand from there.

Reading - Highest priority should be given to reading each day and working on the two book reports for the term. Read at least 30 minutes each day and log it on your Weekly Reading Record.

Two book reports should be completed each term on books of at least 100 pages. They need to pass the AR quiz for each book. Only one report on a book by the same author or from the same series is allowed in each term.

They can also improve their reading comprehension by reading and following directions. When they read, they should fill in their Reading Record. When their Reading Record is filled up, they should turn it in and get a new page or print one from our web site.

Writing - Writing letters to friends or relatives, or writing reports are valuable homework activities. They should concentrate on getting ideas down on the first draft and then improve their work through revision and then pay attention to spelling on the final copy. They are allowed to use computers, but it should still be their own work.

Social Studies - They should memorize the capitals of each state, the location of the states and the two letter postal abbreviations of all the states. They will be assigned to do a state report this year. They will also need to memorize the names of the presidents, the introduction to the Declaration of Independence, the preamble to the Constitution and the first part of the Gettysburg Address.

Arithmetic - Practice fractions and basic math facts, division and multiplication up to 12's. Practice measuring things around the house or in the kitchen. They can even help do some work around the house while they're measuring things.

Practice math facts, times tables to 12 and squares to 25 and square roots from 625.

You can find more practice online if you “Google” “practice math facts.” One of the sites is Harcourt (our math book publisher).
More information can be found in the Parent & Student Handbook that you will receive this year. If you have any other questions, feel free to meet me after school, or contact me by phone, email or send a note.
