Dear Parents;
If you ask your child whether they have homework, they will often say, "No", but that's not necessarily true. The Travis Unified School District policy suggests that fifth grade students should spend an average of 160 minutes on homework each week and that each student should read at home for at least 30 minutes each day. Homework may be work assigned to do at home or it may be work started at school that needs to be completed. With an eye toward the basics you can start with the 3 R's and expand from there.
Reading
Your child needs to present three book reports each quarter so much of their homework time should involve reading. They can also read and follow directions to improve their comprehension. When they read, they should fill in their Reading Record. Any reading material is acceptable for their Reading Record, when their Reading Record is filled up, they should turn it in and get a new page. Their Reading Record should be turned in at the end of the quarter, regardless of how much has been entered on it.
Writing
Writing letters to friends or relatives, or writing reports are valuable homework activities. They should concentrate on getting ideas down on first draft then improve their work through revision and then pay attention to spelling on the final copy. They are allowed to use computers, but it should still be their own work.
Social Studies
There will be state and president reports this year. They should memorize the location of the states and the two letter postal abbreviation.
Arithmetic
Practice math facts, division and multiplication up to 12's. Practice measuring things around the house or in the kitchen. You can even help do some work around the house while you're measuring things.
