The Cambridge Library has been busy this school year. We have classes coming in to check out books every week. Mrs. Tracy is processing new titles purchased with grant money AB862 from the state of California. We have received many atlases, alamanacs and thesauri from World Almanac. Already students are checking out new animal books from Rourke. Soon we will be getting new iMacs for the library. We hope to receive many Permabound titles for beginning readers and all grade levels. Watch for information about new titles in this site soon. We will be participating in a new reading program called Accelerated Reader. Students will be reading books of their choice, and then be able to test their comprehension using the computer program. Teachers will be able to track a student's reading progress on the computer.
The Cambridge Adopt- a- Book Program is going well. Students
, parents and staff may adopt a book for a special occasion such
as birthdays. We have a large selection of books to choose from
in the library, ranging in price from $2.00 to $16.00. Each adopted
book has a special book plate inside with a message. If you would
like to adopt a book for the library, come see Mrs. Tracy or Ms.
Eddy.
Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade have been reading
fifteen selected titles for the 1999 Battle of the Books.
They will form teams of four students to battle in April next
year. Winners last year (with the most correct answers) received
gift certificates to the local bookstore. All participants receive
ribbons. During the class library time, the Librarian Ms. Eddy
does book talks about individual titles in the Battle of the Books.
For the month of October, Students in the fourth, fifth and
sixth grades will be using the WORLD ALMANAC FOR KIDS as a research
tool. Students in
the fourth grade will be listening to Cover to Cover with illustrator
and narrator John Robbins highlighting books like Hatchet, McMummy
and Knights of the Kitchen Table. Students will also be reading
Time For Kids and discussing main ideas, summary and factual statements.
