The Barber of Seville
The San Francisco Opera Guild provides educational programs for the community in support of the San Francisco Opera. It's mission is to develop a greater understanding of opera.
On Thursday, October 30th, the San Francisco Opera Guild came to Cambridge to perform The Barber of Seville with some 6th grade Cambridge students.
The Barber of Seville is a story of a barber
named, Figaro in Seville, Spain who is also a match maker, a tailor, and whatever
else the town people needed. The opera performed at the school was modified
to a shorter version appropriate for younger ages. Figaro arranges for Count
Almaviva to disquise himself so the women he is in love with, Rosina, doesn't
know he is the Count. He wants her to love him, not his title. In the meantime,
Dr. Bartolo, Rosina's grumpy guardian, also wants to marry Rosina.
In the end, Rosina and Count Almaviva marry and Dr. Bartolo gives his blessing.
This comic opera is one of the most popular operas ever written. It was first performed in Rome in 1816.
