Cambridge students learn to be: Safe, Strong, and Free
Chanting "Safe, Strong, and Free", the motto of the
Child Assault Prevention Program (CAPP), students at Cambridge Elementary are
learning practical skills to protect themselves in crisis situtations. During
the CAPP workshops, Sheryl Fairchild, Executive Director of CAPP, and workshop
leader, Amy Cardinale, presented a series of role-play situations to children.
Together with the workshop leaders, children developed strategies to address
each situation presented in the role-plays.
Strategies include assertiveness skills (saying "NO!" in a strong voice or telling a person who bullies to "Stop it, I dont like that,") and telling a trusted adult about the experience. Children learned how to stand up to bullies, distinguish between safe and unsafe touches, and understand that abuse is never their fault.
The program covers four curriculum areas
1. Peer Assault (Bullies)
2. Abduction Prevention (Stanger danger)
3. Physical Abuse
4. Sexual Abuse
Last year, the CAPP program served more than 7000 children in
solano county.
